Humerous camp story: My girlfriend was making a joke about camp kids sitting around a fire singing Kum By Yah (Or however you spell that), not realizing that such places exist beyond popular jokes and that I had attended one. She did not imediately believe me when I started explaining it. I found the website to prove it. In fact, she's laughing at me right now over instant messanger.
What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: I was really shocked. I found Mac's picture of the Doc head without the doc attached to be quite sad. I can't believe the whole thing got sunk after all those years over the septic system.
Did your time Camp Wonposet have any lasting affects on your life?:
I love to fish to this day and every now and again I find myself performing some odd skill, like tying a strange knot, that I know I learned at Wonposet.

Favorite Activities: Sailing, Shop, John Wayne Movie Nights in the Rec Hall
Favorite camp story or memory: Viang (sp?) swatting flies with the pancake turner, then turning lunch... The banquets. Gutterball as guest inspector.
Humerous camp story: I am convinced that Stuart Berlowitz previewed a few too many of those "night at the races" tapes...
What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: Devastating. When I heard it went co-ed, I said, "well, this is the beginning of the end"... Not b/c of gender bias, but it was clear that enrollment issues underscored the demise. I rememb r David Anderson saying at a Sunday evening campfire, "Summer Camps are dying... Insurance issues, family priorities, and fear of abuse". I hear those words now as I have watched many camps close. I never thought I'd see this one go... I am deeply, de ply saddened.
Did your time Camp Wonposet have any lasting affects on your life?: Yes... I expect that having just learned of Wonposet's Closing (two years later), I will spend the next several months really reflecting on my time at camp.

Humerous camp story: Had to have been the inspection conspiracy and the burning and burial of the inspection results on the beach after the banquet.
What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: Very sad, of course, but not unexpected because it was so poorly run. I've lived on the lake for the last 10 years and saw a quick decline. All good things must end, however. It was a good, l ng run.

When were you at Camp Wonposet, and in what capacity?: 1958-62, camper, potwasher, assistent cook
Favorite Activities: baseball; is there anything else?
Favorite camp story or memory: Myself, John Benton, Brad Rochester, and Pete Usher performing a mid-night panty raid in the girls camp across the lake (in canoes). Rochester aroused the entire camp when he could not resist grabing a particular upp r body part. We ran for our lives with 50 screaming females in hot persuit. We were never caught.
Humerous camp story: Selden Russell, assist. cook ('58-59) was no where to be found the evening the councilars picked the anual "gogle" award winner. That night as I turned around to walk off the cook's cabin balcony I spied a movement on top of t e kitchen roof. In a flash I was up on the roof only to find Selden dressed in black crouched beneath the window of the upstairs room. He would find out the winner before the anual banquet! It cost him a price: seconds on desert for the rest of the summ r.

When were you at Camp Wonposet, and in what capacity?: Summer of 1975 Counselor
Favorite Activities: Canoeing, nature director
Favorite camp story or memory: One morning, as all of the counselors and campers were cleaning their cabins, one curious camper (his name escapes me) took a broom and knocked off several shutters on the dining hall building causing a large number o bats to fall, blinded by the light, onto the ground. As the bats came to, they started flying all over the place, causing campers to run in all directions screaming.
Humerous camp story: The evening war canoe stroll around Bantam Lake in which all of the counselors yelled, sang songs, and just had a great time.
What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: I was sad to hear the news. It was a great camp with many good people running it over the years. I really enjoyed my one summer there.
Did your time Camp Wonposet have any lasting affects on your life?: It helped me understand how to deal with young kids, which helped me deal with my own children just a few years after that.

When were you at Camp Wonposet, and in what capacity?: Summer of 1990 as counselor (Tennis)
Favorite Activities: Tennis, baseball, hacky sack
Favorite camp story or memory: Some of the stories E.J. duffy mentioned immediately triggered a lot of memories. Names, faces, and events popped up from nowhere. Big Al, The McCool's ("You little piece of Turkey doodoo..."), the fun with the othe counselors like Rob Nagtegaal and Antoine Kemps (also Dutch), the "nights out" to some bar in the neighborhood, etc.. One story sticks in my mind though. I has this little Italian kid in my cabin, Peter I think his name was, and he was nicknamed the "M ffia kid". I kept wondering why, until at parents day his father came along in a (of course red) Ferrari! As a bonus, I got 6 tickets to the Forrest Hills Tennis Tournement!
Humerous camp story: Counselors of '90, when you read the above, you know what I mean when you read the above.
What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: Really a shame. I never had a clue about the financial effect of the '89 tornado disaster, the year before I came. The spirit of the camp seemed so much alive that a bankruptcy (in time) se med out of the question.
Did your time Camp Wonposet have any lasting affects on your life?: Yes, Very positive memories. Good things don't come by itself, all is in your own hands and achieved by hard work.

Favorite Activities: Sweating it out on the basketball court for those random pick-up games with John McKenna, Jon Goldberg, Gus, Dorf, Dave Brager, Todd Freundlich, Eric Levin, Brad and Trippy Burgunder, Mark Zimmerman, etc. ...- then bellyfloppin into the lake (without checking in with a "buddy").
Favorite camp story or memory: The subjects of most of my favorite or more humorous memories were always followed by meetings with Mark Davis on his front lawn with my dear friends. Whether it was discovering the flamability of bug spray, hiking up to the "A" field as uninvited guests to late night parties hosted by our elder peers or just sleeping in while we were supposed to be busy helping JR with breakfast, it was all a hoot.
Humerous camp story: See above.

Humerous camp story: Taking Craig Holstiens trunk out to the High Dive, blaming it on Yoon Chang and having Craig chase him around with a Hammer the next day. Absolutly priceless.

When were you at Camp Wonposet, and in what capacity?: 1984-1987 Camper, Waiter, Dishwasher and Jr. Counselor.
Favorite Activities: All I wanted to do was to play baseball and try and hit home runs. Sorry for all the times I pulled the ball foul and had everyone searching for it in the woods. Other than baseball, the best part of camp was goofing off and creating havoc while working in the kitchen. And of course, late night w/the guys, scheming and carrying out good old fashioned juvenile deliquent behavior.
Favorite camp story or memory: The people made the place special. Those days will forever be a happy memory in my life. Endless fun.
Humerous camp story: There are too many to mention. The guys I hung out with certainly remember the fun we had and still may not want me confessing to all of our antics. They were:
1. Myles Getlan
2. Eric Levin
3. Todd Freundlich
4. Adam Luria

When were you at Camp Wonposet, and in what capacity?: 65-70, camper, kitchen, junior counselor. I think y only distinction was that I received the first Senior Woodsman award (I was told I was first, anyway) in 68.
Favorite Activities: campcraft, canoeing, archery, the pool room upstairs with all the old books, drinking Teem on the porch in the late afternoon, rain, oh, just about everything
Favorite camp story or memory: When you first arrived on the bus from New York City, that first sight of the lake and the camp was a real message that you weren't surrounded by buildings anymore and you could focus your eyes further than 50 feet. t was magic.
Humerous camp story: Long before computer-enhanced images, Camp Wonposet figured out how a camper could be in two places at once. Once a year, we all stood in three rows in clean Wonposet T-shirts to take the camp picture. About 150 people make a wide picture. The photographer used an apparatus that looked like it was borrowed from Matthew Brady, and in order to get us all in, the camera had to pan slowly across the group. Well, you could stand on the left as the camera started panning, then rac around the back of the bleachers and arrive on the right in time to appear twice in the picture. I think one of the McKenna boys did that a few times. Really cool.
What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: Devastated. When I first got on the web while I was in the Balkans in 1997, I searched for Wonposet and only found a reference in some camp guide reference book. When I found this site, I w s delighted to find it, but very sad that the camp was closed. I remember that we had septic problems with Uncle Joe's and Aunt Mary's occasionally, once it looked like we were re-enacting trench warfare, but it's rough to think that sewage killed the ca p.
Did your time Camp Wonposet have any lasting affects on your life?: Tremendous impact. The people, teamwork, and outdoor skills I learned at Wonposet greatly helped me and probably helped keep me alive during almost 30 years in uniform. George's a chery range let me marry into a family of bowhunters without humiliation. The list of how Wonposet improved me goes on and on.

Keep it up! I live in Texas, and my wife decided early on that a 2-month camp experience was not in the cards for our kids. Favorite Activities: Hanging out in the air conditioned office on hot summer days answering the phone.
Favorite camp story or memory: I once faked drowning for a missing swimmer drill. When the bell was rung I jumped in the water and held my breath at the bottom of swimming area. Fortunately I was found within a minute. I was strapped to a backboard and carried ashore. I spent the rest of the day calming scared young campers who thought that there was a real emergency.
Humerous camp story: I counselored an overnight camping trip with cabin one and a CBS News film crew of four. We had been told by the news crew that we would hardly know that they were there and to just go about our activities as we normally would. We ended up spending two days working with them to set up shots and perform retakes. "We would really like to get a shot of you all walking by a lake at sunset singing the camp song." So we would load up the van with seven year olds and search out a place only to be told that there were too many clouds. The kids were real troopers. The film crew complained the whole time about the bugs.

When were you at Camp Wonposet, and in what capacity?: 1989-1995 Waterfront.Head Counsellor. Assistant Director.
Favorite Activities: Hanging with JR in the kitchen getting the best food and drinking the cooking sherry after taps. That was in my first year, the subsequent years saw JR furnish the walk-in cooler with decent liquor. I also loved to go sailing, but sinking became a habit that got me very wet. The A-Field was another place I would sometimes frequent, but I could not seem to get any further than baseball, with great counsellors such as Tom Seaman and Doug Adams running regular ball games, how could I resist? There were also big camper counsello games, which saw guest appearances from the renowned and respected John McKenna as umpire. This added to the competitive nature of all concerned. To me this demonstrated the ethos of Wonposet, the very appearance from John confirmed that to be part of Wo poset is not an overnight stay. I thought about going to Archery once or twice and I think I actually made it, but I will have to consult the figurehead of Wonposet; George, who is having dinner with Lisa and I tonight. (2/19/99) I also liked riflry, which is until Lisa came up one day and made me look like a blind man shooting through fog wearing sunglasses. Her shooting was very impressive, and as you can imagine I have never done anything to upset Lisa in the ten years I have k own her; just in case. Let’s talk alternate activities: Paddle ball sucked, even the 300lb JR had enough skill to put me into a sweating frenzy as he stood still and returned my lame shots with one hand and drank a soda with the other. Basketball presented the same challenges as above, except the competitors were lighter and faster. We can leave Soccer to the Venezuelans, and as for Tetherball, I still feel guilty about beating that kid from cabin 5.
Favorite camp story or memory: I made a very close friend this day, and almost 10 years later George is having dinner with me in my home, another complement to Wonposet. The day started out windy and only got worse. I had cabin 13, luckily for me, and it was my first year as a counsellor. My early weeks at camp were fraught, I had to deal with some very anti-social behaviour from indigenous counsellors who felt that the international staff had taken over. It was not until many years later that I also considered camp as my own and resented the fact that if you were new then you may be a threat……………..I forgave them. The wind picked up, and during rest hour we all closed the side of our cabins. The rest is history. One of my campers Dave Leman, was determined to watch the whole thing from the front doors of the cabin. I on the other hand was attempting to close the hooks on the cabin sides, I managed one side during the whole of the Tornado. Dave slammed the cabi doors shut after a fish from the lake struck the side of the cabin! That is how the story goes, unconfirmed, but JR did serve up cold food that night for obvious reasons, and one of the dishes was sushi. I saved George from the wrath of the wind, as I as in cabin 13, and we struck up our first real conversation not long after the trees stopped swaying.
Humerous camp story: Swimming was my all time favourite activity, and swimming across the Lake with Sean Wardle and Betsy in the early morning has a long lasting memory. We planned to get up at 6am, before any wind picked up and before any boats go out on the lake. We had some security in the form of Vite Sobolckic (Vic) who followed us in the putt-putt to make sure that we did not drown or go astray. The thought was there, but our security blanket fell asleep whilst running the putt-putt at low s eed and subsequently headed North up the lake as we swam West across the lake. It was only the screams from Sean that brought Vic back to his senses. Sean had had the most personal acquaintance with a cold-blooded scaly predator of the lake, (and this ti e it was not Mark) the nipple biting fish. Vic realised there was a problem and tried to turn the boat around towards Sean, but in his panic he only managed to stall the engine, and by the time Vic was of rescue calibre we were all waiting on Follies Poin for a lift back to breakfast.
What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: The closing of camp did not come as a shock to me. I was part of an administration, that had to make decisions from daily events to yearly plans. I did not however have any influences over t e running of the company. The closing of camp affects all concerned in different ways, from devastation of a way of life to the loss of a summer job, I know it is not as simplistic as that but that is the extremities. Human nature guides us towards scape oats to protect us, Wonposet guides us towards compassion. Take it from the Directors perspective and consider the life you still have after camp, and the life Mark and Betsy may have now!
Did your time Camp Wonposet have any lasting affects on your life?: Yes. What I am now reflects my years at camp. As Lisa mentioned, we have two wonderful children who have had an opportunity to visit camp wonposet and feel for themselves. Friends of my family like George, JR, Andy, Lorna, Colin, Mark, Betsy, Sally, Tom, Danny, Pic, Ron, Vic, Gordy, Doug, Graig, Bill I could go on and on, but you get the picture.

When were you at Camp Wonposet, and in what capacity?: I was there. When is not important.
Favorite Activities: Not relevant to this post.
Favorite camp story or memory: When I first went to Camp Wonposet I was a boy. One who thought the world to be a good place where people always had the best intentions in mind for everyone else. Many of us know that feeling when we are young. Some of us do not remember it however. I remember it very clearly.

At this camp, infront of the beautiful lake stretched before me, my innocence was stripped away. I was no longer my own island. When I left for Wonposet, my father was ill and I knew he was slowly dieing. Tears were in my eyes as I was dropped off at this horrid place for my own good.

My family thought they were hiding this fact from me for my own good, however it certainly was not. As I sat there every night in my bunk, tears in my eyes knowing far off someone whom I loved slipped away, others laughed.

Then came the moment where I was on the point of a break down, and I asked to call home. The selfish bastard Marc denied this, probably because in his petty little mind he thought this was for my own good. I pleased and pleaded for days. They moved me from cabin to cabin, not listening to me. The only comfort I had was the bunk master who confirmed I infact was not insane, and Marc really was a greedy little bastard scared of losing the prepayed weeks money

I thought about running away. I almost did. However, like a miracle a friend came to visit me, and I screamed my fears into his parents and him so hard there was finally a way out. They returned home to my parents and told them of my emotional state. A c ll was placed to Marc who, continued to play the game "but if he gave the camp a chance, it would all work out!".

It's really cute too how he wouldn't allow me to talk to my parents alone too. In any case. Finally. I convinced my parents to let me go home via the obstructed communications channels I had at the time. Of course, the grounds for leaving were, as Marc clearly stated, he keep the money we paid for the future time. MONEY? HE THINKS IT IS ALL ABOUT MONEY?

I left Camp Wonposet changed, and I was able to come home and spend a few more days with my father before he died. My only wish when I looked at the camp for the last time, was that it would someday close. And I have to say, When I found out it had becom a complete failure, my heart sang with joy. And so there was peace.
Humerous camp story: I saw no humor.
What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: It meant a wish was answered.
Did your time Camp Wonposet have any lasting affects on your life?: It made me learn most humans by nature, are bad.

Favorite Activities:
1. Playing baseball with Mac
2. Basketball on the new courts on the lower A Field
3. Riflery
4. Waterskiing
5. Fishing
6. Paddle-tennis
7. Teatherball
8. Woodshop

Favorite camp story or memory:
CAMPER:
1. Listening to Beatles music played every day by my first counselor, Rob McKenna, (he was only 16 or 17 years old then and it was his first year as counselor), on his portable, battery powered, record player in cabin 7 in 1968. Eleanor Rigby was his fav rite and still one of mine.
2. Taking overnight canoe trips across Bantam Lake.
3. Searching for and finding old silver coins in the dirt under the cabins on the North side that fell through the cracks over the years,(the North side cabins were higher off the ground).
4. Waterskiing on Bantam Lake, especially early in the morning with Richy when the water was calm and smooth like glass.
5. Building a chessboard in woodshop with Bill Wall in 1971.
6. Peter Fein framing the front page of the New York Times and hanging it on the front wall of the shop the day after Man first landed on the Moon in 1969.
7. Winning the ping-pong championship for the North side in 1969 with Gutterball presenting the award to me at the banquet.
8. Winning the paddle-tennis doubles championship with Richard Goldmann in 1970.
9. Learning how to play chess from Richard Goldmann in 1970.
10. Playing teatherball next to the council ring by the lake. Was the champion player in 1971 with Bobby Frederick. He and I always had unbelievably competitive games that always ended in a draw while what seemed like half of the camp was watching.
11. Sailing on the Aqua-Cat across Bantam Lake with a group of campers on a windy day.
12. Listening to Veal's and Terry Martinson's great stories about life during "Chapel in the Woods" services on Sunday evenings.
13. Sitting on one of the Adirondack Chairs each day at 4:00 pm, drinking a Coke (cost 10 cents then), looking out over the water to Folly's Point, and talking with friends about the day.
14. Eating the delicious Bantam corn during the Corn Boil.
15. Quassapaug's Wild Mouse: We tried to break a camp record for most continuous rides. I think we rode it about 20 times in a row.
16. Watching Mac, George, Carl, Dave and Wilkie play miniture golf at Quassapaug every year.
17. Paddle-boating at Lake Quassapaug with my brother, Jeff.
18. Going with Mac and a group of campers to see a minor league baseball game at night under the lights. I think Gary McKenna was playing in the game.
19. Playing in the All-star baseball game and hitting a triple off of Keith Silverstein in 1971.
20. Playing in a basketball game at some type of a reformed school or camp for rejuvenile delinquents where the Wonposet All-Stars beat this team for the very first time.
21. Arguing with the New Yorkers about how the Orioles, the Bullets, and the Colts were better than the Yankees, the Mets, the Knicks, the Jets and the Gaints.
22. Reading Veal's story on his cabin wall, written in calligraphy, about how the bumble bee, from an aerodynamic standpoint, cannot fly but since he doesn't know this, he goes on flying anyway.
23. Taking the Senior Life Saving course from Veal and during the final water test, trying to save Veal from drowning, which of course was impossible because he was so big, overpowering, and dangerous in the water which was the lesson Veal was trying to onvey.
24. The caring and friendliness of Mrs. Hosnick, Mrs. McKenna, and Mrs. Anderson.
25. Candy store.
26. Peanut Carnival: Veal's game: "Everybody wins.....Except the Losers"
27. Watching "The Babe Ruth Story" and "Robin and the Seven Hoods" movie in the rec hall.
28. Walking up to the A Field with Mac or George and passing the Water Well building on the way.
29. Playing bingo in the dining hall during rainy day events, with George as the caller.
30. Hitting the ball over the fence off a pitch from Mac for the first time in 1972.
31. Playing great stick ball games on the lower A field. The backstop was a square drawn on the southside washhouse. A double was hitting the rec hall; a triple was hitting the rec hall roof and a homer was hitting it over the rec hall.

WAITER, DISHWASHER, JUNIUOR COUNSELOR AND COUNSELOR:

1. Eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and leftovers; drinking bugjuice and milk at night in the dining hall with the other counselors after the campers were sleeping.
2. Going to Poppy's, the BanMar, Holiday Pizza, and Friendly's and Burger King in Torrington at night with other counselors to get "good food". Veal used to ask the waiter at Holiday Pizza to cut the pie into 7, (an odd number) of slices and put "Ext a Regular" onions on it.
3. Driving Veal's car, (I believe it was a pink 1957 Chevy), which had an accelerator that became disconnected from the floor). We used to play "starship" in this car with Veal, Hank Havel and others by turning off the headlights for 5 or 10 seconds whil driving down the winding roads at night, (were we crazy?)
4. Watching George, Mac and others play setback in the dining hall at night. George used to hold his playing cards up-side-down.
5. Taking a day off with Tom Melloni and canoeing with him to Folly's Point, buying steaks from a local market and barbecuing at a campsite on Folly's Point.
6. Taking a day off with Fritos and Melloni to see "The Eagles" play a concert in 1973.
7. Taking a day off with "Gus" to see the Doobie Brothers at the Hartford Civic Center.
8. Taking a day off with my bother Jeff, George Bitar and others to spend a day in New York City.
9. Figuring out with Richard Goldmann how to run the dishwasher as a one-man operation, (versus a two-man operation) so that the other man could get some rest. Dave caught us and did not approve.
10. Attending the beer parties on the A field late at night.
11. Kidding around with Willy in the kitchen when we were waiters and dishwashers.
12. Winning the flag for cleanest cabin, (Cabin 2) several times in 1976.
13. Running Basketball as the counselor for the first time in 1975 or 1976; the year when the new blacktop court was build on the lower A field next to the nature lodge.
14. Filling out the nurses report for your cabin every morning before breakfast and reading some of the funniest comments by the other counselors.

....THERE ARE SO MANY MORE GREAT MEMORIES AND I APPRECIATE THE OPPORTUNITY TO REMINISCE HERE...
Humerous camp story: See above
What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: Very sad. But the memories will always live on and never be taken away.
Did your time Camp Wonposet have any lasting affects on your life?: There are many occassions in my business when I bump into a fellow Wonposet alumni in the Baltimore area. In some cases I have determined a Wonposet connection without ever having known the person at camp. Its nice to have that special bond. I feel that the camp has had a tremendously positive impact on my life in helping me to become independent; in shaping my morals, in handling responsibility and difficult situations; and in m king friends.

Favorite Activities: Soccer, archery, baseball
Favorite camp story or memory: My favourite memeories of camp are not specific to the camp, they are of the people I had the pleasure of working with. Several names to mention would be Gordon, Nick, Sally, Dan, Vic, Sana, and Elki who have shared any a happy time with me in camp (and Dianes Bar).
Humerous camp story: In 1996 we had a visitation from the world peace orgaisation who delivered a white stick (aka peace pole) the whole camp were made to stand round and chant and sing to this pole. It was a very surreal experience - many of the c uncellors were holding back tears and on several occasions the odd explosion on laughter could be heard.
What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: I am staggered, I thought about returning last summer (1998) and having just found out I dont know what to say.
Did your time Camp Wonposet have any lasting affects on your life?: Well I am a school teacher in Bahrain (an island off the coast of Saudi Arabia) I myself am English, and working at Wonposet gave me the idea that working with children from many d fferent parts of the world was what I wanted to do in life.

When were you at Camp Wonposet, and in what capacity?: Camper, waiter, dishwasher, junior counselor (1976-1985).
Favorite Activities: Baseball, swimming, ultimate frisby, paddle tennis.
Favorite camp story or memory: Anything having to do with Alex Kaufman. Alex, who I saw a few days ago, was a camper that became part of camp lore long after he stopped coming to camp. A new sub-waiter or waiter would be sent from table to table ith an extra dessert for Alex and each counselor knew to send the unsuspecting sole to another table. One year, Alex won a couple of baseball players of the week award and many other camp accolades.
Humerous camp story: As an alumnus of Veal's advanced swimming program, I spent several summers as a number zero swimmer. This "high" honor went to those who were willing to be subjected to attempted drownings by Veal under the guise of teaching u water safety. "Buckle down winsocky (sp?), buckle down. You can win winsocky, if you buckle down." Veal always told us to go limp if we felt we were drowning. Good advice!
What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: I was sad to hear the news. I still have my trunk from camp days with all of the stickers inside; I was ready to go back if the opportunity arose.

When were you at Camp Wonposet, and in what capacity?: 1979, second half. Camper in Cabin 14.
Favorite Activities: Eating beef jerky. Reading Conan comic books. Unintentionally annoying cabin mates like fellow cabin-mate and Geyer-web respondent Jonny Goldberg.
Favorite camp story or memory: Coming back 17 years after taking up space at Cabin 14 to win my first and only Wonposet medal, a yeoman-level archery prize from George Walsh, who suggested I pay a return visit to the camp after I had written up a n wspaper article about the camp alumni program the previous winter. He had kept meticulous records of all his archers through the years, and told me I stopped a round back in 1979 with two more sets of arrows left and only 12 points to earn. So in 1996 I r turned to finish what I started and did, earning the cheers of fellow campers a generation younger than me, but feeling great about it all the same.
Humerous camp story: I guess my only serious pop at a baseball back in 1979, which people told me flew to the edge of the left-field fenceline of the lower field (nearest the archery stand) but was caught in a wonderous diving grab by one of the on y campers regarded as more of a lost cause than me. Still, I seem to recall getting more back claps for my drive than that kid got for his catch, which really was the play of the day. Offense was more prized than defense at Wonposet back in 1979.
What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: It was devastating. Wonposet's story truly deserved to go on, but I felt its greatest days were behind it, as an all-boys, all-residential camp. Even though I was the last kid who fit into th t scheme while it was around, it saddens me all the same to see it go. The real end of an era.
Did your time Camp Wonposet have any lasting affects on your life?: Teaching me to adapt better to unexpected situations. Introducing me (belatedly) to George Walsh, who is really one of life's great teachers.

When were you at Camp Wonposet, and in what capacity?: 1965 - 1970
Favorite Activities: Archery,Tennis and Baseball
Favorite camp story or memory: My favorite memories always include the extraordinary counselors we had at Wonposet. George Walsh, Terry Martinson, Mac McKenna, sons Gary and Robby, "Veal" Cutler, "Moose" Anderson, "Gutterball", Carl and Dave, so m ny fine role models that influenced my life. Little things like the sound of the waves gently pounding Bantam Lake's shores, as we lined up for the lowering of the flag, still stay with me. The light that time of day...so golden. Wasn't winning the extra ice cream and the honor of coveting the flag for Inspection excellence the biggest thrill?!? I also remember the great pride I felt when I won the Swimming, Tennis and Archery rophies in three consecutive summers. But it was only Wonposet that could bring those skills out of a young boy from Brooklyn.
Humerous camp story: Here's a story that only recently has come to light. George Walsh loved to play his musical soundtrack albums in his Cabin 16. I, too, loved this music and ended up performing in high scool and college shows, earning an MBA in heater Arts. Well, as a Birthday suprise, we got him the soundtrack to "Promises, Promises". We thought we really hit it right with this one! He was very appreciative and played the record often. Only recently, from a correspondance from George, did I learn that he really wasn't crazy about the musical or the music...initially!! BUT, it did grow on him. It was so like George to go along and be polite, knowing how happy it made us.
What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: It made me sad and reflective, but also made me realize that Wonposet's run was really quite remarkable. I only wish my 3-month old son, Justin Thomas, could have experienced all the wonders f Wonposet some day.
Did your time Camp Wonposet have any lasting affects on your life?: I took with me the confidence that I could play any sport well. I learned about teamwork, the importance of patience and compassion and an appreciation of folk music (Peter, Paul nd Mary from Terry!) and musicals from George!

When were you at Camp Wonposet, and in what capacity?: Camper, 1968-1970
Favorite Activities: The annual visits with our "sister" camp, Camp Tyrole, of Oxford, CT. This was special since my two sisters went to camp there. When they visited us we had an all-star baseball game. I remember being upset during one of these visits that I didn't start the game, but as it turned out, I ended up playing more innings that the starters. It seems like a small thing, but it was a big deal when I was 10 years old.
Favorite camp story or memory: One day, when taking a ride on the "Aqua-Cat", we were going too fast and it tipped all the way over. Even though I was wearing a life jacket, I was trapped underneath. The next thing I knew, an arm reached down fro above and grabbed me and pulled me up. That arm belonged to Carl Hostnik. He probably doesn't remember this, but I'll never forget it. One memory that I can't find mentioned here is the visit made each year with our "sister" camp, Camp Tyrole in Oxford, CT. Since my sisters went there, it was nice to see them.

Humerous camp story: The year Tony Wright almost won the state inspector of the year
What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: That no one else would have the opportunity to experience what I did during my 10 years at camp

When were you at Camp Wonposet, and in what capacity?: I'm not exactly sure, but I think 1960 to 63. I was a camper and the last year a dishwasher. I think I skipped waiter.
Favorite Activities: Sailing, overnight camping, baseball and archery
Favorite camp story or memory: Too many, but I recall many exciting sailing days on a rough lake, including one where most of the boats capsized. Also I liked boxing night in those days (not now!) and baseball, especially when some of the better p ayers would hit it over the fence and "win a steak dinner" from Mac.
What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: Disappointed. I only heard from my brother about it yesterday. I really enjoyed the summers I spent there.
Did your time Camp Wonposet have any lasting affects on your life?: Absolutely. I learned my love of sailing and overnight camping there and enhanced my baseball skills; I continue these activities to today including coaching my son's Little Leagu team for seven years (he gave it up this year at 16). I remember the kids and the counselors; I had many friends. I have lived in Canada most of my adult life and I go camping here every year. It's hard to describe all the character building things tha occurred during those years at camp - but I remember having great summers and I know that was important .

When were you at Camp Wonposet, and in what capacity?: 1991-1995, 1997 (Camper, waiter, and dishwasher)
Favorite Activities: Baseball and Basketball, and wipping Doug and Pic with the ropes from our bathing suits. (Matt Gallagher, Pierre Goud, Bobby Andrews, etc.)
Favorite camp story or memory: There are too many great memories to narrow down to a "favorite."
Humerous camp story: My second or third year, I had Doug Adams as a counselor. One night, he decided that we should have an "Indian Night" and sleep in the Tee-pee. Well, we all thought this sounded like a fun idea. We had a great time, until the n xt morning. When we woke up, all of our trunks, including Doug's, were layed neatly across the grass in front of our cabin. Doug seemed to be the most angry of us all. For weeks to come, I spent my time trying to figure out who this mysterious prankster w s. I never found out---until a few weeks ago. I was talking to Doug and he finally admitted that he was the one who had taken our trunks. This was a great prank, and I never would have suspected him.
What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: I was incredibly upset. I spent 6 of the best summers of my life there. I loved every day at camp, and I was planning to become the next "George".
Did your time Camp Wonposet have any lasting affects on your life?: I made some great friends at camp, friends of all ages, and friends from many different countries. I can't think of any other place where I might be able to spend time talking to p ople from 20 different countries.

When were you at Camp Wonposet, and in what capacity?: Starting around age 9 (1978) through around 1987, as a camper, waiter, dishwasher, JC, counselor, dining hall manager.
Favorite Activities: Riflery (2-year trophy winner), baseball.
Favorite camp story or memory: It was in a north-side cabin, and we were headed off on our overnight and telling stories on the van about the dreaded three-finger Willie. When we got to our campsite, there was a dead deer lying where our tent was upposed to go, so we all got back in our van to go home. On the van someone mentioned that he thought he saw three finger marks in the deer's neck -- Willie had put the deer there to scare us off his site. On the way home, a car coming the opposite dire tion ran us off the road, so our van was lying in a ditch. One of the overnight counselors swears that the driver of that car looked just like Three finger Willie. Of course we all believed him. We were heading towards a back-up campsite, when it start d to storm one of those Connecticut storms. We were all convinced that Three finger Willie made that storm happen to keep us from camping at all.
What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: Even though I was no longer working there, I went back to visit and hit on the nurses as often as I could. It's just hard to believe that there's no more nurses to hit on. No, seriously, I an't imagine not going back there to visit, but I'm glad I was around Camp when it was alive.
Did your time Camp Wonposet have any lasting affects on your life?: Similar to the Lisa McCool account which you may have already read, I too met my wife (and son) at Wonposet. Lorna Campbell was working at Wonposet when I was up visiting one summ r, she kept coming back, and I kept going up to visit, and to make a long story short, we're now living in Scotland and have been married for almost 6 weeks!

Favorite Activities: Swimming and playing with Colin Campbell and Julia Davies on the front lawn.Going sailing with daddy. "Playing" at being a nurse by helping mummy give out the medicines at meal times.
Favorite camp story or memory: At the age of 13 months during my 2nd summer toddling over to the kitchen to get friut and freshly made cookies from my best buddy J.R. Being stung by a bee when I was two playing on the swing set down by the creek- a word from mummy, not a favourite memory but a definate memory that is still referred to!
Humerous camp story: Mummy and I flew out to camp without daddy in the summer of 95 as daddy had to come over later due to work. I was playing out on the front porch of the dining hall with Colin Campbell while mummy was inside giving her healthcare talk during staff training when I somehow managed to get my head stuck inbetween the railings I screamed and the entire staff came flying out of the dining room to rescue me. Poor mummy got such a fright which can't have been good for her as she was 8 weeks pregnant with my baby brother!!!
What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: I was very sad when mummy and daddy told me that "camp" had closed now I guess I'll never be in cabin 5
Did your time Camp Wonposet have any lasting affects on your life?: Yes I now have a very big "other family" with lots of VERY SPECIAL people "Granpa George" who comes over to see us in February each year, my very special J.R. WILSON!! Then of course there is Uncle Andy Goldberg Lorna and Colin Campbell,"Sally Camel",Julia, Mark and Betsy,Tom Seaman The Fusco's,Dan,Linda,Vic and Lukas, and everyone who touched my life. When we are having lunch I always say to mummy "it's breakfast time at camp"or when I'm going to bed I ask "What time is it in America now?" With mummy and daddy's memories I'm sure I won't ever forget Camp Wonposet or my "other Family"

When were you at Camp Wonposet, and in what capacity?: i started at camp wonposet the summer of 87 thru to the summer of 95 and as far as i know i was the longest serving international camp nurse. here.
Favorite Activities: Contrary to public opinion it wasn't just catching "ray's!!!" I loved riflery and made many medals including "marksWOMAN" first class thanks to Andy Goldbergs guidence.Archery, when I could get up to the A field, sailing and general swim and then of course there was my own activity EATING ICE CREAM!!!!!!!
Favorite camp story or memory: How do you begin to find one particular story or memory when your heart is overflowing with so many? I guess this really has to be the summer of 89 - July 10th to be exact! Not only did we have a little "wind" problem on that day but it was then that I realised how special a certain water front counsellor had become!!! What followed was also to become part of Wonposet history because I was to be the 2nd wonposet nurse to meet and marry a wonposet waterfront counsellor in the camp's history so I discovered at the reunion in 91 when I had the privalege to meet the first wonposet nurse to have done this. And some said it was just a holiday romance! If so it has lasted a long time as Simon and I have just celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary. The other memory that springs to mind is my first summer when 974 campers and staff names were recorded in the infirmary medical log book! I would love to know how so many people could get"sick"in just 8 weeks!?
Humerous camp story: This has to be the summer of 88 when during the evening meal - well during dessert to be exact - Shelly my assistant nurse that summer and I were "devouring" the large bowl of ice cream on the head table when slowly ALL the ice cream bowls from each table were quietly placed on the head table until the whole place was in uproar and Shelly and I were in 7th heaven!!!! The other has to be again during a meal- lunch to be exact- when I was standing on the front porch with Tom Ruane(and I know he won't mind me giving away his identity) who was vomiting over the railings only to look up and see none other than the HEALTH INSPECTOR walking towards us!!!!!!!!
What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: Like so many have written before it was like losing a friend and again altho like so many I knew the day was getting closer but prayed that day would never come. I feel so privaleged to have spent 8 summers with people who have truly become my "other family"
Did your time Camp Wonposet have any lasting affects on your life?: Most definately and that is in the shape of a HUSBAND and TWO MOST WONDERFUL CHILDREN - Hannah and Samuel- I guess nothing is quite as lasting as that!! I know that Simon and I were both so grateful that both our children were able to have become part of something so precious and indeed that we were fortunate enough to make it back last summer for our vacation and so that Samuel could at least see Wonposet from the "outside!?"

Comments:
What a wonderful tribute to a wonderful place and how better to help the Wonposet family to stay in touch and share their memories with each other to keep this place alive in all our hearts and minds.

Favorite Activities: Sailing, Waterskiing, Shop and Archery
Favorite camp story or memory: One of my favortie memories is when the whole camp would get together for Saturday and Sunday evening campfires. All the great camp songs we used to sing as loud as we could so Uncle Botchagaloop and Aunt Botch could hear us across the lake. I also really miss the stories that were told by Veal, my father and Carl during chapel on Sunday evenings.
Humerous camp story: Who remembers when Jeff Plattus used to go crazy whenever there was a threat of a thunder storm. He would run around camp in an anxious frenzy about an imcoming TORNADO!!!! Little did we know that Jeff was ahead of his time, only ten years too early to warn the people at camp in 1989.
What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: It meant the loss of a very close friend. I considered all the people at camp a part of my family.
Did your time Camp Wonposet have any lasting affects on your life?: Since leaving camp I have never met more interesing people and characters in the "real" world as we had at Wonposet.

Comments:

When were you at Camp Wonposet, and in what capacity?: Camper, Waiter, Dishwasher, JC, Counselor. '79-'86
Favorite Activities: Waterfront, baseball, "pepper" with Mac, having fun and causing trouble with my camp buddies.
Favorite camp story or memory: Too innumerouble. Campfires. Great baseball games. Fun days off waterskiing on the lake. Hanging out on the porch for an afternoon soda. Riding in the back of Dave G's RAV -- a huge beast of a car that helped supp rt oil prices in the mid '80s. Creative, hilarious and (usually) harmless practical jokes on fellow campers and staff.
What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: As someone said, like losing an old friend. While I guess the memories are most important to me now, it's sad to think that others won't have the chance to experience the great fun, friendsh p and life experiences that I did at Camp Wonposet.

Favorite Activities: Everything, just being there was great and inspiring. I speacilly liked waking up at 6 am. to go waterskiing, archery, and talking with my friends in the kitchen.
Favorite camp story or memory: The never ending "Three finger Willy". And ofcourse, all the great stories that made or gave the womposet magic.
Humerous camp story: Too many to write them down.
What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: First of all, a lot of saddness. But as most of the people have said, I thought it was coming. I just sometimes don't want to believe that we grow up so fast and leave all of the greatest tim s behind so fast.

Favorite Activities: swimming; sailing; watching the sunsets;
Favorite camp story or memory: Holiday pizza with Veal, Hank Havel, Tom Maloney and others. Ordering a "regular pizza with extra regular onions"
Humerous camp story: Veal jostling the handle on the gas tank to "borrow" a teacup full of gasoline to pour in the carberator of his '57 Chevy. Mac convincing the campers they should stay after the season for the "wintering over party"
What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: I visited camp this winter before I heard of the closing. Physically it wasn't different. It was always a timeless place, a piece of childhood that I felt I could always return to if I wanted to. Now I don't have that opportunity anymore. It's a shame.
Did your time Camp Wonposet have any lasting affects on your life?: I have run an inpatient psychiatric unit for 15 years now. I've always said my best training for running the unit was my past experience as a camp counselor at Wonposet.

Favorite Activities: Archery and shooting the rifels.
Favorite camp story or memory: I didn't have many friends (I was one of the little kids). But one guy in my cabin befreinded me. I also remember the amature night. One guy sang "In A Gada Da vida" (I think). He got a standing ovation while he played his air guitar. I remember he was a hemopheliac. I also remember when I returned to the camp to bring my son. The smells never changed. All the cabins looked the same and the dinning hall was as I remembered it. I will never forget that.
Humerous camp story: I wanted to sit at "Gutterballs" table one day while I ate. But all the big kids tried to get rid of me - until I told them "Gutterball" was my uncle! You should have seen them change their minds then. My one time I was the "bi kid"!

Favorite Activities: Beating the dishwashers and waiters on the paddle ball courts.
Favorite camp story or memory: Far too many great memories from camp to even begin to put them on paper.
What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: It was a fear in the back of my mind over the last couple of years there. None the less, the news of the camps closing saddened me greatly. One cannot help but be greatly affected when it was such an important part of your life for so many years. I live very close to the camp and can't help but getting a very empty and sad feeling each time I drive by the place and see it desserted.
Did your time Camp Wonposet have any lasting affects on your life?: I think the greatest effect or impact the camp had on my life were the lasting friendships that were established over the years. When were you at Camp Wonposet, and in what capacity?: I was a camper in the summers of 79 and 80. I was in cabin 4? in 79. Mark Wintrub was my older cousin, Mark Miller my firs counselor and Stu my counselor in 80.
Favorite Activities: All of 'em. Sports, baseball and soccer especially, saturday night camp fire, color war-did blue win in 79? Color war field day, wood shop, Archery....reading letters from home during rest hour, polar bear and fireball swims, oda call and candy night...Quassy , and much much more.
Favorite camp story or memory: I guess activities and memories have sort of merged in the last almot 20 years. I'll have to think of specific stories, but memories of morning flag raising, the walk up the trail to the fields, sawdust in the wood s op, tony playing the bagpipes, fishing.....it brings back an awful lot for a nine and ten year old experience.
Humerous camp story: Again, I'll think of some, but one night I remember the bat coming out of the rafters in the hall and trying to mate with the flying monkee in the sinbad movie that was on. Also as campers leaving food in the middle of the cab n so raccoons would visit us at night.
What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: I have just learned that camp is closed. I feel extremely sad. I live in the Seattle Area, my wife actually directs to Girl Scout resident camps, but camping doesn't have the same traditions out here as back east, and to see those traditions go away is hard to take.
Did your time Camp Wonposet have any lasting affects on your life?: My time at camp pales in comparison to Mckenna's, Welsh, or Dorfman, after all it was only two years, but those two summers ave helped shape who I am today. I worked my college ye rs as a counselor at various camps, worked with youth for two years after, and dream of someday owning/working at camp because I believe the experience is so valuable for young people.

Keep it up, the sites great. I should have left work an hour ago, but I am sitting here dredged in memories. Maybe have a virtual reunion. It would be great to get back in touch with old camp friends.

I think this is a fantastic idea. Way to go Joe. I can't wait to stay in touch with some of the old friends i have lost track of through the years. I look forward to the growth of this alumni site and will think about improvements that can be made. One i mediate thought comes to mind! How about a Dorfpad/ Wompanotes - i.e. Morning report? A cyberspace version of the infamous pad is definately in order!!!.

When were you at Camp Wonposet, and in what capacity?: I followed Mac, my high school coach, to camp after I graduated from high school in 1960 and I was there until it closed, sadly, after the 1997 season. Except for my first year, I ran the arche y range and proudly watched generations of boys(and since 1994-girls,too) earn archery medals and build up their self confidence and sense of self worth. It was great to see. During this time, I was also captain of the Red team during the annual Red and B ue Competition. I spent about 24 years doing battle with Mac as the Blue captain and shorter times against Bill, Sean, Tom, Yopi, and Sally.

Favorite Activities: Obviously, I loved Archery, but I also enjoyed getting out to sail on my infrequent nights off. I ran the Peanut Carnival and the Track Meet when Mac "retired"and these were always a lot of fun. Trips to Saratoga with Carl and utterball were always fun.

Favorite camp story or memory: Read the story I submitted in the Camp Stories area about "Moose's Day Off".

Humerous camp story: Read the story I submitted in the Camp Stories area about "Gutterball Goes For A Swim".

What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: It was devastating. I have worked there for 38 years and it is a very special place to me. I always knew that I would retire someday, but I always felt that Wonposet would be there to visit a ter I did. I guess that I was wrong. Nothing lasts forever, I guess.

Did your time Camp Wonposet have any lasting affects on your life?: I made many friends, both campers and counselors, that I still keep in touch with today. I got my teaching position indirectly because of a camper---Steve Hauptman. I had been wri ing to Steve for a few years and when I was sending out applications, I sent one to North Bellmore Long Island, Steve's town. The school district had an opening and I have been here for 33 years.

Comments:
It is a great idea and I hope that a lot of former campers or counselors find it and enjoy it and keep in contact. This will help to keep the spirit of Wonposet alive.

What did news of the Camp Wonposet closing mean to you?: Even though I hadn't worked at the camp in a long time, it was like I lost an old friend. I thought of the lyrics of the old classic song "American Pie"...

Long, long time ago
I can still remember, how that music used to make me smile
I knew if I had my chance, I could make those people dance
Maybe they'd be happy for awhile...

Did your time Camp Wonposet have any lasting affects on your life?: Yes, I made some great friends there. I still keep in touch with some of them. Camp Wonposet opened my eyes to all of the different walks of life we come from and how we all desi e the same things.
